In the Radio & Satellite Research Division, two missions balance out for coping with the fourth industrial revolution in the field of radio and satellite technology :

1) a traditional mission to support governmental functions on frequency, radio environment and satellite communications/broadcasting and 2) an industrial promotion mission to create new and valuable radio and satellite applications. The research in this division can be categorized into four topics – 1) radio resources, 2) radio environment and monitoring, 3) satellite technology, and 4) terahertz basic technology.
In the research on radio resources, we develop two types of technologies. First, we work on the spectrum engineering to support governmental management of frequency resources. Second, we develop the communication technologies to improve spectral efficiency such as frequency sharing schemes and OAM technology for multiplex transmission.
In the research on radio environment and monitoring, we develop the countermeasure to adverse effects of electromagnetic wave on the human body, electromagnetic interference and compatibility between electrical devices or systems, and the technology for radio monitoring. Moreover, we develop a safe and cheap medical diagnosis and treatment technology using radio and a wireless power transmission via efficient and high order DOF (Degree Of Freedom) in alignment and position.

In the research on satellite, we develop the state-of-the-art technology for the satellite communication/broadcasting and its application based on the space proven operation and commercialization of COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) satellite launched in June 2010 with in-house developed Ka-band payload and performance verification of its satellite ground control system. Recently, we start a new research to develop a countermeasure to jamming a satellite-based navigation system.

In the research on fundamentals of terahertz, we develop novel components (e.g., THz Schottky barrier diode, photodiode THz emitter and photomixer) as well as creative application systems (e.g., spectroscopy and non-distructive measuring system). We actively work on terahertz technologies to widen the applications of a terahertz frequency, which has the unique features in the field of sensing and material analysis.

The division deals with a wide range of frequency spectrums from VLF to infrared and a very wide coverage from several millimeter to regional area using satellite.
