Standards Research Division
□ Standards Research Division
Founded in September 1989, the Standards Research Division is ETRI’s primary department for ICT standardization, acting as a control hub and spearheading global ICT standardization initiatives.
It leads to the standardization of essential technologies within public bodies like ITU-T and ISO/IEC JTC1, as well as industry organizations, including 3GPP and W3C. Specifically, it plays a pivotal role in shaping and addressing national interests at significant ITU events such as the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP) and the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA). It also assists government ministries in strategizing critical standardization initiatives and actively tackles national standardization challenges.
It oversees Standards Committees and Expert Committees focused on standards, creates standardization roadmaps, identifies key international standard technologies, and devises strategies to enhance its leadership. These efforts enhance the standardization outcomes of ETRI’s research teams and elevate ETRI’s influence and leadership within international standardization bodies.
In a rapidly evolving global ICT technologies landscape, the Standard Research Division enhances international technological competitiveness by implementing proactive standardization strategies, thereby optimizing standardization results for ETRI and the Republic of Korea.
- Research and Development Activities
1. Strategic Standards Research Section
The Strategic Standards Research Section is the fundamental unit driving ETRI’s standardization governance. It establishes standardization policies, sets strategic directions, and coordinates internal and external standardization efforts. This section formulates ETRI’s standardization roadmap and develops strategies to proactively address changes in the domestic and global standardization landscape. Additionally, it researches crucial technology areas, such as AI, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, enhancing the nation’s digital competitiveness. By actively engaging with public standardization bodies like ITU-T and various industry-driven groups, it further strengthens the global competitiveness of Korea’s ICT technologies.
2. Intelligence & Information Standards Research Section
The Intelligence & Information Standards Research Section researches future-oriented ICT standards based on intelligence and information. In particular, it focuses on standardizing core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution—such as mobile (5G/6G), the metaverse, self-driving cars, the web, blockchain, security, and quantum technologies. By collaborating with industry partners in market-driven standardization bodies, including 3GPP, W3C, COVESA, SAE International, and IETF, it actively promotes the development of international standards.
3. ICT Convergence Standards Research Section
The ICT Convergence Standards Research Section creates technologies and standards to facilitate convergence in ICT sectors and other industries. It emphasizes domestic and international standardization in digital twins, smart cities, smart manufacturing, smart energy and electrical safety, smart agriculture, fisheries, livestock, service robots, and K-quarantine models, thereby enhancing public safety and disaster response. Furthermore, it develops technical standards for broadcasting and telecommunications equipment while engaging in standardization efforts that tackle social challenges in transportation, national defense, welfare, and other facets of daily life.
