On April 5, 2016, ETRI held a ceremony to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

In 2016, ETRI successfully developed 5G low-latency mobile telecommunications technology, which reduces the delay of at least 20ms of 4G mobile service to the level of 2ms.

On August 29, 2016, to transfer governmental technologies to the private sector and commercialize them, ETRI and Hancom Group held Malang Malang Tech Day, a conference for technological cooperation.

On November 18, 2016, ETRI-developed Exobrain, which appeared on EBS Janghak Quiz, the nation’s longest-running quiz show, and won an overwhelming victory in the competition, scoring 510 out of 600 against a student who had received a perfect score on the national college entrance exam and against former winners of the quiz show.

In 2016, ETRI’s efforts in the intelligent semiconductor industry resulted in the development of Aldebaran, an AI professor that recognizes objects in daily life as accurately as humans can. The institute is currently focusing on applying the technology to IoT, wearable computers, and robots.

On December 30, 2016, as part of its efforts for innovation and communication, ETRI remodeled its rest area and transformed the area into a multipurpose cultural space for employees’ creativity and communication.

ETRI participated in the "Korea Electronics Show (KES) 2017," the largest electronics trade show in Korea, and introduced its latest research outcomes.

ETRI participated in the "ITU Telecom World 2017," the world's biggest ICT Olympics, and presented the "IDX Strategy," an implementation strategy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, along with 13 other technologies, receiving a positive response from the public.

A new employee dormitory and a daycare center, which will create good housing and childrearing environments for the researchers, were completed after two-year construction period, which started in 2016.

In 2016, "Etturi," the mascot of ETRI, was created by the ideas received from the employees and their family members. In 2020, additional family mascots such as "Etturia" were created.

ETRI developed a tangible simulator based on the state-of-the-art VR technology that can be used in the fire drills using actual firefighting tools in a virtual environment modeled after a fire accident.

In June 2021, ETRI launched AutoVe, an autonomous shuttle service operating on campus. With no driver's seat and no passenger intervention required, it demonstrated advanced Level 4 autonomous driving technology.

ETRI researchers developed an accelerator chip, a key technology for supercomputers. The chip integrates a general-purpose processor and a 64-bit parallel processor, delivering 8 TFLOPS of FP64 performance.
