History of ETRI

As a world-leading ICT and AI research institute, ETRI has devoted itself tirelessly to research over the past half-century in order to advance the national economy and improve the quality of life for the Korean people.

From the Time Division Exchange (TDX), which ushered in the era of one telephone per household; memory semiconductors that helped establish Korea as a semiconductor powerhouse; CDMA, which opened the door to Korea’s leadership in mobile communications; DMB, which accelerated the era of television in the palm of one’s hand; WiBro, which enabled internet access anytime and anywhere; AI capable of understanding human language; real-time multilingual automatic interpretation connecting the world; 5G and 6G technologies that opened new horizons in communications; to quantum technologies that will reshape the future — ETRI has set countless world-leading milestones and has driven Korea to become an unrivaled ICT powerhouse.

Over the past 50 years, the accumulated economic impact of ETRI’s technologies has reached KRW 494 trillion, and based on these achievements, Korea has firmly established itself as a truly advanced nation.

Now, upon the deep roots of ICT cultivated over the past half-century, ETRI is extending new branches of intelligence and once again soaring toward an even greater future.
