In 2007 for full-HD video data processing, ETRI developed encoder technology to reduce power consumption and improved compression ratio by at least 50% compared to the existing MPEG-4 standard.

On February 26, 2010, ETRI held a groundbreaking ceremony for its Convergence Technology Commercialization Center, which serves as an outpost for commercializing convergence technology developed by small, medium-sized, and venture businesses.

On March 18, 2010, with the aim of integrating and nurturing ETRI’s outstanding information technologies and the major industries in the Daegu region, ETRI held a groundbreaking ceremony to build the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Research Center, an intensive research facility for convergence of R&D efforts in the IT industry.

In 2010, ETRI developed the SAN-based remote ship maintenance technology, which applies IT achievements to the shipbuilding industry.

On October 13, 2010, ETRI received a presidential citation (group prize) in the section of international standards, at a ceremony to celebrate World Standards Day in 2010, held by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, an affiliate of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.

On October 20, 2010, ETRI held a ceremony to give bone conductive telephones, which had been developed by its researchers to aid the hearing impaired, to the elderly in the local community.

On February 15, 2011, as part of its creative research project to create new ideas and conduct mid- to long-term research on basic original technologies, ETRI launched the Creative Research Section.

On March 10, 2011, ETRI held an IT symposium for smart national defense with the topic “Direction-setting for convergence of national defense and IT to strengthen the nation’s new growth engine.”

In 2011, ETRI independently developed an active RFID-based location tracing technology and, with the aim of saving system expenses, also developed a GPS tag chip and reader modem chip smaller than a coin.

On May 4, 2011, ETRI invited about 50 science and technology officers of 27 foreign embassies in Korea, and government officials from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, and introduced and demonstrated its key R&D technologies.

In February 2014, ETRI acquired an ITU-T international standard by developing the cloud DaaS system, which allows mobile device/laptop users to access data and programs in their personal computer without spatial or time restrictions.

On April 17, 2014, ETRI won the world’s top place the third of three consecutive years in comprehensive evaluation of patents registered in the United States, demonstrating its outstanding performance in patent management.

On September 15, 2014, ETRI held an integrity oath ceremony as part of its efforts to internalize an ethical culture, including such aspects as the e-audit system; it also strengthened punishment of those engaged in corrupt practices.

In 2014, ETRI developed an intelligent LED information lighting technology, which improves traditional lighting, whose only function is to illuminate darkness.

In 2014, ETRI continued its work on gesture distinction technology using finger motions, research that had been launched in the early 2000s, and improved the technology to a level ready for commercialization.

In May 2015, ETRI-developed a simplified certification solution and became the world’s first institute to pass FIDO certification testing.

On June 5, 2015, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning held a briefing session on R&D strategies. ETRI secured an increased budget of KRW 2.6 billion for three new projects to be launched in 2016, solidifying its capacity to perform its own R&D projects.
