Play K-POP

A new era has arrived in which art can be experienced first-hand with other senses—sound and touch—not only with the eyes. Recently, museums have been seeking to provide viewers with more realistic content by combining artwork and ICT solutions. A case in point is Play K-POP, an experience-oriented museum where various exhibitions and first-hand experience facilities, along with realistic hologram performances, welcome visitors. This Issue introduces to you to Play K-POP Jeju, emerging hot place in the Jeju Island these days.

Hologram Concert, More Real than Real

Play K-POP Jeju is an experience-oriented museum dedicated to K-POP, where ICT solutions, such as VR and AR, allow visitors to feel as if they were with their favorite stars.

Live Holo Concert, which represents this theme park, is a 4D performance that combines hyper-realistic holographic images, a media façade, and analog performances. On a large screen, visitors can enjoy stunning stage performances of popular K-POP stars, such as PSY, G-DRAGON, BIGBANG, CNBLUE, and AOA. The concert hall is equipped with three large screens displaying colorful images on the front, left, and right sides, along with powerful sound systems and flamboyant lighting effects, resembling those of real concert halls. Not only that, the face of a randomly selected visitor will pop up on the screen, and the star will sing for him or her. With this, visitors naturally immerse themselves in the performance, all the while oblivious of the fact that it is a virtual concert.

Aside from live-performances of K-POP stars, various other programs are provided, such as “Club Dance Party” and “As DJ Likes.” Performances take place ten times a day, and the size of the audience is limited for each. Thus, if you want to participate, make sure to check the performance schedule in advance. Please visit the ticket offices or the Play K-POP Jeju website.

Meet the Star through AR Experiences

In Play K-POP Jeju, you can go on a virtual date with your favorite K-POP stars or put on a joint performance with them. In the “Meet the Star” hall, you can ride a van and go on a fantasy journey with the K-POP stars, or make special memories. Imagine a romance rumor, with your favorite star being seen everywhere on the covers of magazines and bus stop ads.

The “Star Magic Bench” zone is a spot with the long line of visitors, where you can take a photo with the star in various poses, for example, resting your head on his or her lap while making a finger heart together. In the “Star Photo” zone, full-size K-POP star figures appear in the photo booth, and you can take a photo with them. It is a paid-for service but very popular because it provides realistic experience, for example, those K-POP star figures appear while talking or saying hello to you.

In the “Be the Star” hall, visitors can learn K-POP dance moves and songs and try on K-POP stars’ stage costumes and makeup. To be more specific, as you step into the “Red Carpet Photo Zone,” you will be greeted with camera flashes and loud cheers. In the “Star Fitting Room,” you can virtually try on the actual concert costumes of artists. At the “Star Makeup” zone you can try on their stage makeup. Also, you can make a music album featuring a special celebrity in the “Star Recording Studio,” and you can produce a music video featuring yourself in the “Dancing Room.”

Music Trip That Links between
Past and Present

Play K-POP Jeju also has exhibition halls that people of all ages can enjoy together. The “K-POP History” hall features various programs, as follows. The “Artist Top 100” zone introduces the top 100 artists of our times. The “Sound Tunnel” is where you can listen to tunes of different periods of the past while appreciating their lyrics. The “Music Library” is the archive exhibition of best artists and albums of each era. In the “Prohibited Songs” zone, the archive of prohibited songs of the past is provided. In the “Dance History” zone, you can enjoy signature dance moves of the past displayed in holographic capsules.

Memorably, the“Music Library” is a special place where you can view the history of Korean popular music at a glance through the archives of significant and influential music albums, sorted by era and genre. Also, you can learn how music players have changed over time from record players to cassette players and further CD players. In the “Starry Night” zone, you can become a listener or guest of one of the best long-lived radio program “Starry Night.” What is special about this zone is that the special-effect mirror allows you to enjoy seeing yourself seated beside the show’s DJs of the past.

The ticket for Play K-POP Jeju resembles a cassette tape, supposedly stimulating nostalgia. In terms of functionality, however, it is state-of-the-art. All first-hand experience facilities can be accessed by recognizing the QR code of the ticket. Also, all images and photos taken in these facilities are stored in the server and can be downloaded for free of charge. If you want, it is possible to buy a USB device that contains those data.

With the release of the film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Queen fever has been sweeping through the country. Likewise, music serves as an effective medium to offer a link between generations. If your entire family wants to communicate with one another through music, Play K-POP Jeju would be the best place to visit. Why don’t you go on a music trip there?
