World’s best in mobile, wireless backhaul technology Towards high-speed mobile communications

CleverLogic

CleverLogic, which specializes in the development of communications technology, ensures stable, uninterrupted communication for all users regardless of place. Over the years, it has concentrated its R&D on advanced wireless/wired communications and signal processing technology. As the world’s first to succeed in the commercialization of MHN mobile, wireless backhaul, the company has significantly enhanced the global presence of Korea’s mobile communications.

01

Follow-up of the notable success in CDMA

Korea’s decision to foster the information and communications industry in the 1990s paved the way to its current status as the world’s leading country in ICT. The year 1996 was a milestone not only in the ICT history of Korea, but also the world. In that year, Korea launched high-speed internet services that could not even have been imagined by developed countries. It succeeded in commercializing Code Division Multiple Access(CDMA), which was regarded as achievable only in theory, and wrote a new chapter in the world’s history of ICT.
Korea maintained the No. 1 spot following its CDMA success, and this was accompanied by developments in related fields, including components, solutions, and systems. CleverLogic is a good example. Since its establishment in 2008, the company became the world’s first developer of mobile, wireless backhaul technology. Today, it continues to be an icon of Korea’s excellence in mobile communications.

Giga speed mobile WiFi supports high-speed downloads
even on high-speed trains

Advancements in the ICT industry have established high-speed internet connections in all places imaginable, from households and offices to mountains and the sea. However, some constraints still exist. High-speed internet was not possible on busy subways and high-speed trains operating at 300 km/h because the wireless network could not keep up with the speed of users on the go and the high traffic.
The world’s first Mobile Hotspot Network(MHN) developed by CleverLogic allows users to enjoy uninterrupted online services on high-speed trains and subways. Backhaul refers to a system that connects users to an information and communication network via smartphones and tablets. Ultimately, it connects users to a nearby Local Area Network(LAN) and Wide Area Network(WAN). Given the explosive increase in the number of communication devices, backhaul technology is being developed with consideration of how fast data can be transferred over networks.

* Mobile Hotspot Network(MHN) mobile wireless backhaul technology
This technology uses millimeter-wave(at least 10 GHz) frequencies to provide Gbps-level data services in high-speed mobile environments. It is comprised of an MHN Terminal Equipment(mTE), which is responsible for millimeter-wave backhaul transmission; an MHN Digital Unit(mDU), a modem unit installed in stations; and an MHN Radio Unit(mRU), which is a device with an antenna and is installed along railway tracks. The minimum frequency band is 100MHz, and the technique adopted for transmission is Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM). The effective bandwidth can be expanded using carrier aggregation technology, and movable millimeter waves facilitate transition into 5G networks.

Giving wings to small/medium-sized companies and government-funded research institutes in 5G mobile communications market

Recently, ETRI’s high-speed data communications technology has laid the foundation for companies to enter the Chinese market. With New York City about to introduce advanced subways featuring public WiFi, the future is bright for CleverLogic’s MHN mobile, wireless backhaul technology.
CleverLogic’s MHN technology is rated as more advanced and sophisticated than similar technologies owned by global conglomerates. This is one of the reasons why the company is expected to thrive in overseas markets.
CleverLogic has consistently exerted efforts to lead the 5G market and IoT industries. In particular, it is focusing on the development of M2M modem chipsets and customized business models that satisfy the diverse needs of customers. It will lay the groundwork for small- and medium-sized companies to enter middle markets, which require the technical expertise of large companies but involve lower development costs.
CleverLogic’s MHN mobile, wireless backhaul technology will be the follow-up to Korea’s legendary success in CDMA. Another welcoming aspect, in addition to the title of “world’s first and world’s best,” is the development of a business model that benefits both government-funded research institutes and small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Mini interview

Ilgyu Kim, Director, Mobile Wireless Backhaul Laboratory, 5G Giga Service Department, ETRI

“CleverLogic is our team and family.”
Korea’s small-and medium-sized companies have the world’s most advanced technology for wireless modems. Many of ETRI’s technologies target relatively smaller markets that tend to be overlooked by major companies. It is very meaningful for us to cooperate with a smaller company and succeed in commercialization. In the process, we form a special bond and gain a deeper understanding of each other.

Support provided by ETRI

- Commercialization of MHN technology
- MHN system commercialization by applying mobile, wireless backhaul to public WiFi on the Seoul Metropolitan Subway
- Technical support for BB part development

Outcomes of ETRI’s support

- Reduced commercialization time with technical design and testing support for MHN modems
- Acquisition of development capacity for millimeter-wave 5G modems
- World’s first to succeed in multi-giga millimeter-wave MHN commercialization
- Signing of commercialization MOU with companies such as SJ Leaders and P&P+
- Commercialized multi-giga millimeter-wave wireless, mobile backhaul for Korea’s subway system in 2017

Youngmin Choi, CEO of CleverLogic

“ETRI is our ecosystem.”
The biggest obstacle for small-and medium-sized companies when competing with larger companies lies in the depth of theoretical knowledge, which arises from the difference in organizational power. ETRI possesses advanced technology but faces some challenges in independent commercialization. The harmony between ETRI’s technology and CleverLogic’s development capacity is the driving force behind successful commercialization.
