IoT Hybrid App Platform
ETRI has developed the 3.5 version of its app platform, an improvement for application development using Bluetooth, WiFi, and other IoT technologies. This version, called 'HyWAI', upgrades the hybrid app platform developed by ETRI in 2010 for the first time in Korea to merge the strengths of embedded apps to be installed in a smart device and those of Web-based apps. Akin to hybrid cars, hybrid apps converge different technologies.

As a result, hybrid apps can work independently in the same manner as embedded apps, and can also handle screen configurations and data processing as their Web-based counterparts do.

The 3.5 platform supports both Android and iOS, the two most widely used operating systems for smart devices. Therefore, new apps can now be developed on various platform environments, enhancing compatibility, efficiency, and productivity. The new platform also satisfies global compatibility by complying with the international standards required by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium).
In addition, this platform enables to develop hybrid apps simply with Web programming, to control IoT with smart devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs. It can efficiently support different platforms. Using HTML5, the latest specification for Web documents, HyWAI can also develop apps and configure user interfaces easily.

Even if app developers do not have detailed knowledge about program languages provided by different platforms, they can still develop apps with a small amount of HTML and other codes. Furthermore, hybrid apps can also be registered and sold on app stores.

“This hybrid app platform 3.5 is the newest technology that properly reflects the current market demand. We hope a number of developers will bring forward the era of easily developing IoT apps.” said Dr. Seung-yun Lee, head of Service Standard Research Team, ETRI.
