ETRI’s 40 years in photos

  • On January 30, 1996, ETRI launched a commercialized test network for 2.5G optical transmission devices.

  • On January 31, 1997, ETRI’s Korean title was amended following the amendment of the Telecommunications Act.

  • On Aril 2, 1997, in commemoration of its 20th anniversary, ETRI set the goal of becoming a research institute that would lead the welfare of humankind.

  • On August 21, 1997, the first IMT-2000 workshop raised attention to 3G mobile telecommunications.

  • On October 21, 1997, ETRI held the second CIC, an annual event to celebrate the commercialization of the world’s first CDMA, developed by ETRI.

  • In 1997, ETRI’s endeavor to discover outstanding patents resulted in over 6,000 patent applications and 2,000 registrations in Korea.

  • On March 2, 1998, the Information and Communications University established by ETRI was founded and held its first matriculation ceremony.

  • In December 1997, ETRI opened the Business Incubation Center, which significantly helped ETRI become a cradle of venture business.

  • In 1998, the quarterly ETRI Journal became Korea’s first journal in the field of information/telecommunications and electricity/electronics to be listed in the Science Citation Index (SCI).

  • On April 23, 1999, ETRI held a demonstration at sea for an active antenna system for mobile receipt of satellite broadcasting.

  • On April 29, 1999, ETRI held a presentation on the development of next-generation mobile communication technology.

  • In 1999, through joint development efforts with a Korean company, ETRI successfully developed the synchronous IMT-2000 (CDMA2000) STP system.

  • On November 24, 1999, as part of its multifaceted efforts, ETRI held a symposium to discuss the trends of and strategies for international standardization to lead international technology standards.

  • On July 6, 2000, ETRI held a public hearing regarding policy measures to select IMT-2000 operators.

  • On June 13, 2001, ETRI held a ceremony to celebrate the publication of the 1,000th issue of Weekly ICT Trends.

  • On April 19, 2002, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) opened its office at ETRI to strengthen international standardization in the Internet Web field. Korea became the world’s 11th country to host the W3C office.

  • On June 14, 2002, ETRI held the fifth PTIT-ETRI seminar. Having concluded a technology cooperation agreement with the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology in Vietnam, ETRI has jointly held the annual technology exchange seminar.

  • In 2002, to commemorate the Korea-Japan World Cup Games, ETRI demonstrated the world’s first 3DTV broadcasting in real time.

  • On November 19, 2002, demonstrating its objectively appraised quality, ETRI’s quality management system obtained ISO 9001:2000 certification.

  • In 2003, ETRI began to make full-fledged efforts to develop terrestrial DMB technology and finally developed core technologies.

  • On August 22, 2003, ETRI launched the PATH 1G E-PON transmission service developed by its network research institute.
