6G Communication Core Source Technology

6G is not merely faster communications, but a next-generation communication technology that brings ultra-immersive, ultra-precise, and ultra-low-latency services into everyday life. ETRI has preemptively secured world-leading 6G core technology and demonstrated its technological competitiveness by showcasing the world's first 200 Gbps-class wireless transmission and integrated wired-wireless services in a real-world setting. This achievement, spanning wireless, networking, and service verification, is expected to serve as an important milestone that brings forward the 6G era, which will begin in earnest after 2030.

6G Demands a Precise Network

6G is expected to have its standard specifications completed in early 2029, with commercial services beginning after 2030. Accordingly, major research institutes and companies around the world have already entered the race to gain an early lead in 6G core technology. The Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) has set out the target services and performance indicators for 6G through the IMT-2030 framework (6G vision), and on this basis, the direction of next-generation communications is taking concrete shape.

Among these, the ultra-immersive interactive communications and high-precision vertical services that 6G aims for demand a level of latency control and reliability that conventional networks can hardly deliver. Speed alone is not enough; ultra-precise network technology that accurately guarantees information delivery time end-to-end across the network is essential. Amid this trend, ETRI set out to secure core technology that encompasses both 6G wireless transmission and wide-area network technology.

World's First 200Gbps 6G Wireless
Network Demonstration

The ETRI research team succeeded in the world's first demonstration of a 200 Gbps-class 6G wireless link, significantly pushing the limits of 6G wireless transmission technology. This is a significant achievement in that it surpassed the 100 Gbps-class demonstration previously regarded as the highest level and realized the peak transmission speed envisioned by 6G in an actual system. A PoC system encompassing base stations, terminal modems, and the protocol stack was built and fully validated, and the related technology was transferred to a domestic SME, securing the potential for future industrialization.

Along with improving wireless communication performance, the research team also secured core ultra-precise network technology for end-to-end wide-area networks. By developing ultra-precise packet delivery technology that guarantees both in-time and on-time transmission, along with a performance-tailored programmable network stack, the research team laid the groundwork for precisely controlling, at the network level, the bandwidth and latency performance required by application services. This is a core technology that enables the deterministic latency guarantees required by ultra-immersive services.

Ultra-Immersive 6G Services Become Reality

ETRI built a nationwide integrated 6G wired-wireless testbed and, on this basis, demonstrated immersive, ultra-realistic communication services in a real-world setting. At ETRI Conference 2025, real-time remote gaming and a remote collaborative metaverse performance were delivered over an ultra-low-latency network linking Seoul, Daejeon, and Busan, offering a glimpse of the future services that 6G will provide.

These achievements go beyond a simple technology demonstration, heralding the changes 6G will bring across industry and society. Ultra-precise networks and ultra-high-speed wireless transmission can be integrated not only with the metaverse, XR, and remote collaboration, but also with a wide range of fields such as manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation. The 6G core technology secured by the ETRI research team will expand into international standards and the industrial ecosystem going forward, establishing itself as a foundational technology for a hyper-connected society. 6G is no longer a communications technology of the distant future; as a technology that stands ready, it is moving one step closer to people's everyday lives.
