The Communications and Internet Research Laboratory is actively researching on the fields of mobile communication technology which includes wired/wireless integration and broadcasting & communications convergence, future internet technology, optical internet infrastructure, and future network technology. Through these research, the quality of life and public convenience would improve through the realization of mobile life and communication services that can be provided anytime, anywhere. Also it would bring the future knowledge-based society into reality.

For the leader in the Creative Economy Infrastructure Technologies, B4G mobile communication systems provide a high-quality, high efficient future mobile services, efficient adaptation with respect to traffic variation, and also 10 times the radio transmission capacity and energy efficiency compare to the 4G mobile communication systems until 2015. Also development of converged a 5th Generation Communication Technologies with emotion and knowledge-based service, and of future technologies of machine-to-machine or things-to-things communication until 2017.

Our representative research technologies are as follows : the 4G and 5G mobile communications, high-speed short-range wireless communications, future internet technology, internet-based converged network, packet-optical integration, converged service platform, next-generation Tactical Information Communication network(TICN) etc. The main focus of our research is on the core technologies and also other technologies that can be vital for green growth.

Throughout the years, we have provided several brilliant achievements such as CDMA, WiBro, LTE-Advanced, IEEE802.16m based WiBro advanced, QoS Router, packet-optic technologies etc. All of these have played a pivotal role in the development of the telecommunication industry.

From now on, the Communications and Internet Research Laboratory will aim for "the domination of the world market through preemption of personalized mobile multimedia convergence technologies and also by becoming the world-leading country of intelligent mobile". Regarding the next generation mobile communications, our research plan is to focus on 3GPP LTE advanced technology, high-speed mobile internet (IEEE802.16m based WiBro advanced), beyond 4G and 5G technologies, low-power wireless transmission technology, and Tactical Information Communication network. Also for the Internet(All-IP) based wired/wireless and broadcasting convergence technologies, the focus would be on OmniFlow technology, optical internet technology and converged service platform technology. Through these research, we would like to further develop the current IT technology and also contribute in a way of creating a new industry by merging with various industry fields.

Our research laboratory is composed of seven departments with different research areas.

Future Internet Research Division conducts clean-slate research and development in the area of Future Internet to overcome architectural limitations of the current Internet. B4G mobile communications Research Department conducts a research on core technology for the B4G mobile communication system. Wireless Access System Research Department is currently developing the standard for commercial 4G mobile communication technology and conducting a core technology for converged wireless communications systems for other industries. Wireless Transmission Research Department carries out the developments and researches for the 5G related technologies. Smart Network Research Department researches smart cloud networking core technology to realize an efficient exchange of knowledge and information in Big Data era. Optical Internet Department conducts the research on technologies that enable the network of 10Tb/s, 100Tb/s and 1Pb/s step by step. Also, the Honam Research center is supporting technology from strategic businesses in the area and developing customized technology for the facilitation fo local businesses, while commercializing the technologies developed by the main office and the center for distribution.

Through the world-class research on wired/wireless communications and network done by each department, our institute possesses international competitiveness along with a reputation as a world-leading research institute.
