
IT component is the intermediate product which has the electronic function for producing the IT product. The growth of IT component industry play a crucial role for the improvement of IT product competitiveness as national key industry, and contribute to stimulate IT material industries.
The domestic IT component industry is divided into semiconductor components, display panels, and universal components. In 2007, ₩106 trillion total production, $ 66.5 billion export, and $ 24 billion a favorable balance of trade was achieved. However, the large companies which are in 4% the whole enterprise lead more than 90% of total exports, and most of more than 5 thousand companies are small-size with fewer than 50 employees. Most of the small companies are facing with harsh environments like China's low-cost and Japan's high value-added parts. Furthermore, Korea, well-known IT nation, does not reach at 50% of component localization for main IT products like WCDMA cell-phone, repeater, RFID, settop-box, etc. As the dissemination of new services leads to import core IT components from Japan, deep-seated Korea-Japan trade deficit has not been overcome.
The green growth with low carbon emissions is the global trend that triggered by global warming and fossil energy crisis. Now is the time to jump to world class component company for the domestic IT component companies by prior occupation the new market. To success green growth, green IT, and renewable energy, new various IT components have to be developed and diffused.
Convergence Components & Materials Laboratory will create next generation component technologies like OLED lighting, LED, power semiconductor devices, transparent display, MEMS sensors, and solar cells by raising IT component industries beyond the memory industry. Moreover, Convergence Components & Materials Laboratory will develop the high value-added convergence components technologies which linked to systems and services such as military, broadcast & telecommunication, automotive, and robots, to bring up the world class mid-size enterprises.
To make a goal for the creation of new profitable technologies and upbringing the mid and small-size enterprises, Convergence Components & Materials Laboratory will establish the convergence components R&D strategies which linked to core patents, R&D, standardization, and commercialization. By collaboration with outside organizations like foreign research institutes and industries, R&D synergy will be created. Under the background of successful developments of IT in 1990s, the members of the Convergence Components & Materials Laboratory will struggle on researches of IT convergence components for green growth and the standardized components which connected with systems.
