Speech/Language Technology Research Department
Speech and language technology, which processes human knowledge through human language understanding and speech recognition is one of the most difficult technologies. State-of-the-art applications are not enough to commercialize although a lot of companies and universities like MIT, AT&T, IBM and Microsoft are challenging to break the wall.
After 15 years’ effort to develop speech/language technology, though it’s still limited to several applications, our research branch is recently getting some noticeable achievements such as commercialization of Korean-English Bidirectional Machine Translation Technology for Patent and development of Very Large Vocabulary Speech Recognizer(500,000 Points of Interest) which is now being tested for telematics.
As intelligence, portability and compactness become the main issues of IT in ubiquitous environment, speech and language information processing comes into the spotlight as a future intelligent interface, so we see our role growing bigger and more crucial. With confidence in the recent accomplishments, we promise to make every effort to achieve a technological breakthrough in human knowledge science.
In 2001, we started as a research center which covers the area of voicing processing such as automatic speech recognition, speech synthesis, speech-to-speech translation, etc., with the aim of bringing up the speech information processing industry of Korea. The center had merged the field of machine translation and knowledge mining to become one of the major speech and language research center in the world in 2004.
The center is comprised of forty experienced researchers holding Masters or Ph.D. degrees in this field. There are four research groups such as language processing team, voice processing team, knowledge mining team and automatic speech translation team in this research department which lead the development of state-of-the-art core technologies through active cooperation with domestic universities and companies as well as foreign research organizations.
The research department has also built and distributed standard spoken language database for the progress of domestic industry of this area, enforcing the competitiveness of domestic industry of this technology area. We will make every effort for the growth of speech and language processing industry in the future.
